Neurodiversity Celebration Week, from March 16th-20th, is a global initiative that recognises and honours the strengths, talents, and contributions of neurodivergent individuals. Founded in 2018 by Siena Castellon, the week challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences, while promoting a more inclusive and equitable society.

The initiative provides schools, universities, workplaces, and communities around the world with an opportunity to shift perspectives. Rather than focusing on limitations, Neurodiversity Celebration Week encourages people to recognise and celebrate the unique abilities of individuals who think, learn, and experience the world differently.

Locally, the What We Can Do Group marked Neurodiversity Celebration Week at their recent meeting. The group is inclusive of people of all abilities and continues to advocate for greater awareness, inclusion, and community participation.

One inspiring member of the group is Megan, who plays an active role both within the group and the broader community. Megan is part of the planning committee for the Echuca International Day of People with Disability celebration. She also contributes to fundraising efforts by helping count containers at the Kyabram Container Deposit Scheme. These efforts support International Day events and help fund Hidden Disability Sunflower products. Megan proudly identifies as neurodiverse and is a valued contributor to these initiatives.

Kyabram District Health Service continues to demonstrate its commitment to inclusivity by being a Hidden Disability Sunflower-friendly organisation. The Hidden Disability Sunflower Program is recognised worldwide and supports individuals with non-visible (or hidden) disabilities. By wearing the sunflower symbol, individuals can discreetly indicate that they may need additional support, understanding, or patience in public spaces.

This initiative plays an important role in fostering acceptance and ensuring that people with hidden disabilities feel seen, respected, and supported in their community.
